In memory of a wonderful man and improviser
In 2021 one of my International Improv Ensemble members (from the Honey Spiders) died unexpectedly. It was heart breaking and to be honest I still can’t believe that my wonderful German colleague and friend has passed. He was an inspiration to me and was extremely active in the international online improv community. He was full of knowledge and improv understandings. Also being a Tai Chi teacher, he could see the parallels with improv having the ability to become ‘a practice’ and we spend many hours philosophising about the personal development applications of improv. He was also a talented artist. You can see some of his art below.
I am so grateful that because we were online improvisers, we managed to record so many rehearsals and performances and when I miss him, I can just watch them. It was so amazing how connected we were even though we never met ‘in real life’. It shows me that you definitely can make meaningful connections online and that connection is all about really being present with someone with your attention.
He will be sadly missed by many improvisers. I am happy to say that I have created an improv scholarship for Improv Hub in his name for those who may be in financial difficulty. It is called the Martin Boedicker Scholarship. I am in no way making big money out of my improv business right now, but I feel that this tribute to him is something I can do for him and for others who may need it, especially considering the hours of free training he gave to many improvisers in the international improv community.
Martin was my 2nd ever guest on Drummond & Friend and our scene is still one of my all-time favourites. Enjoy watching this beautiful man in action here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGSjyLh7_wQ&list=PLxF8b7Cw5egPnaIuaboUBDGA9Q4j9uwpB&index=13.
I hope you are all well and telling those that you love that you love them. We only really ever have THIS MOMENT!
